Follow the steps in this article to reset the sensor, if you are having trouble connecting Spruce Sensors to the network, or if the Spruce Sensor isn’t working properly. Please perform these steps next to your SmartThings Hub (within 5 feet or standing next to the Hub) to eliminate any range concerns. Excessive wireless traffic, especially heavy Wi-Fi use, will affect the sensor’s ability to connect.
Remove Spruce Sensor from the network
- Remove the 2 screws from the sensor with a Phillips screwdriver and slide the top cover off.
- The o-ring in the outer groove creates a waterproof seal for the Spruce Sensor. Be careful to not lose this o-ring.
- Do not attempt to remove the bottom plastic plate. It must remain permanently attached to the Sensor probe.
- Unpair the Sensor by holding down the Join/Leave button on the Sensor. The LED indicator will turn blue after a few seconds – release the button as soon as the LED turns on. The LED should now be off.
- Remove the battery, and leave it out for at least 1 minute to ensure a full reset.
- If you have already added your Spruce Sensor to SmartThings, or if it has joined as a generic “Thing”, remove it from SmartThings:
- In the Sensor’s Thing page, tap the three dots at the upper right hand side of the screen, then tap Edit Device
- Scroll down and tap, “Remove”
- Spruce Sensor is now completely disassociated with your SmartThings Hub.
Reconnect or Re-join Spruce Sensor to the network
- Make sure the Spruce Sensor is not exposed to moisture during the join process.
- In the SmartThings app, Connect a new device by going to the Marketplace, then tap Connect a new device.
- Re-insert the battery. The sensor will automatically attempt to connect. Note: You can also try to press the Join button (once every 10 seconds or so) if the Sensor doesn’t join after 30 seconds.
- Once connected, select “Spruce Sensor” on the list of connected devices.
- On the next screen, rename your sensor with a description, and add this Sensor to the Spruce Room
- When done, tap next. The next screen configures how Spruce will interact with the other smart devices in your home. Make any desired changes, then tap Done.
- The Recently Tab should say “Configuration Successful” soon after the “Configuration initialized” message. NOTE: you may need to completely back out of the Spruce Sensor Summary screen in order for the Recently Tab to update.
Test the Sensor
- Go into your Spruce room and navigate to the details page for this Sensor. You should expect to see something like the screenshot below.
- Place the Sensor in a glass of water such that the probe is about 3/4 submerged. DO NOT expose the battery or any of the electrical connections to water.
- The refresh interval for moisture data is 10 minutes, so wait at least 10 minutes for the moisture value to update
- A sensor in a glass of water should nominally read around 40%. If the sensor updates to around 40%, the sensor is working properly.
- Note: The sensor will only record a value when there is a change. So if it is sitting in water for 30 minutes (for example) there will be no change and the only reported value in the “Recently” tab will be the initial registration at 40%.
- Note: The sensor may read higher values when installed in extremely wet or dense soil. 40% is not a maximum value.
- In air, the sensor should read 0% (fingers on the probe will affect this value). Remember that the sensor will only report in 10 minute intervals by default, so you may have to wait to see the change in value.
Reinstall the plastic housing
- Ensure that the o-ring is attached properly – it should be pushed down flat against the bottom surface of the plastic, and hug the outside of the o-ring lip. This o-ring serves as the seal which prevents water from entering the device, so take care to install the o-ring correctly.
- Slide the top cover back on and re-install the screws.
